Nightshadows - Chelsey Browne
31 May - 29 June
10am-6pm
OPENING RECEPTION: 31 May 2025 6-9pm
Intimate images of plants explore resilience and coexistence between ecology and technology in Folkestone’s first major exhibition of Canadian-born photographer Chelsey Browne.
This is the first major exhibition of Canadian-born photographer Chelsey Browne in Folkestone.
For over a decade, Browne has been taking photographs of small flowers or weeds defying the odds in unexpected places - emphasising their resilience and fragility and the coexistence of nature in the urban world.
“ The plants I photograph are not found in pristine forests or manicured gardens, but in overlooked spaces—by bus stops, alleyways, beneath glowing advertising billboards. Their struggle to survive against the odds resonates in a world where just survival is a statement of intent.”
Nightshadows explores the interplay of ecology and the tensions of fragility and strength inherent in both human life and nature.
Chelsey Browne is a Canadian photographer, Artist and Curator based in the UK. She studied at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design in London, graduating with a BA Hons in Fine Art in 2009. Since then, she has curated or exhibited in over 20 exhibitions. She is an established portrait photographer with many high-profile private clients.
Chelsey was Project Manager for Venice Agendas (2016-2019), a talks and events programme that runs during the preview week of the Venice Biennale, and she was part of the team in various roles for Strangelove Time-Based Media Festival (2017-2020.) She is the founder of Arts Council England funded projects Platform Art Projects and Print Editions Gallery and is currently working as a freelance photographer, curator and artist.
