Karwan Omar is an influential contemporary dancer who fled Iraqi Kurdistan in 1998 because his life was under threat. He settled in Switzerland, where he refined his craft as an artist, educator, and choreographer.
A decade later, he returned to Kurdistan, introducing contemporary dance through the region’s first modern workshop. His efforts sparked a movement, inspiring cultural centres and dance enthusiasts.
Despite challenges in Iraq—where political crises, corruption, and conservatism sideline the arts—Karwan remains committed to dance as a healing force and dreams of founding a school to train future dancers.
With 24 years of experience in Switzerland, he shares his expertise to bridge cultures and promote understanding through dance, despite limited funding and political barriers.
